The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, elected new executives on Wednesday, March 12.
The election, held at the chapel office in the Press Centre, saw Ankeli Emmanuel of National Accord emerge as chairman, securing 18 votes to defeat Ismail Umar of Voice of Nigeria (English Service), who garnered nine votes.
In other contested positions, Musa Ubandawaki of Vanguard Newspaper triumphed over Adeniyi Olugbemi of Leadership Newspaper, while Umar Danladi Ado of Triumph Newspaper defeated Innocent Onuminya of This Day Newspaper to emerge as Treasurer.
Other candidates who were elected unopposed, include Olakunle Maruf (Tribune Newspaper) as Assistant Secretary, Adamu Suleiman (The Nation) as Vice Chairman, Shaf’aatu Suleiman (The Sun Newspaper) as Auditor and Ibrahim Goronyo as Financial Secretary.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected chairman, Ankeli Emmanuel, commended chapel members for the peaceful conduct of the election. He pledged to promote unity, transparency, and productivity within the chapel.
The NUJ Sokoto State Council Chairman, Usman Binji, lauded the credential committee for ensuring a smooth electoral process.
He urged the new executives to foster inclusivity and collaboration among members while aligning with the broader objectives of the state council.Binji further expressed confidence in the chapel’s ability to uphold journalistic standards and emphasized the importance of ensuring members receive due recognition for their work.
The Chairman of the Credential Committee, Abdullah El-Kurebe, reassured contestants of the committee’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election. He emphasized that unity within the chapel remains a top priority.
