Blast Backfire: 11 Bandits Killed by Own Explosive in Zamfara Forest

11 Bandits killed by Own Explosive

At least 11 suspected bandits were killed after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated while they were allegedly transporting it for an attack in Zamfara State.

The explosion occurred near Babbar Doka village in the Dansadau Emirate of Maru Local Government Area, amid renewed concerns over rising banditry and the increasing deployment of explosives against security personnel in the state.

According to local sources who spoke with ‘Media Smarts Nigeria’, the armed men were riding motorcycles along a bush path when the device suddenly exploded with a loud blast.

A resident suggested the group may have been heading to plant the explosive against security operatives working in the area.

Security sources reportedly identified the group as fighters loyal to the notorious bandit leader Dogo Gide. It was gathered that one of the riders may have lost control on the narrow path and fallen, accidentally triggering the explosion.

While 11 individuals were confirmed dead at the scene, several others sustained serious injuries. Authorities indicated that the casualty figure could increase due to the severity of the injuries suffered.

Confirming the incident, the Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba, said the group had allegedly intended to target security operatives before the device went off prematurely. He added that security forces are continuing intensified operations against bandits in the state.

The commissioner of Police also called on residents of Zamfara and neighboring states to stay alert and support security agencies by reporting suspicious movements, particularly individuals seeking medical attention for unexplained injuries.
