Kaura Namoda byelection: PDP candidate defects to APC after losing election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State has welcomed Hon. Muhammad Lawal Kurya Madaro, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the just concluded Kaura Namoda South State Assembly bye-election, into its fold.

This was contained in a statement signed by the APC State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Yusuf Idris Gusau, who described the defection as a sign of growing confidence in the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Hon. Kurya, who contested under the PDP but lost to the APC candidate during the September 16 bye-election, announced his defection at a well-attended event organised by the Hon. Yazid Shehu Danfulani Project at Taula Event Center, Gusau. He said his decision to join the APC was driven by the lack of direction and internal crisis within the PDP.

Kurya noted that the by-election made him realise that over 90 percent of voters in the constituency, especially the youth, are APC supporters, despite the PDP being the ruling party in the state. He assured that he and his supporters would work for the progress and success of the APC in Zamfara and beyond.

Receiving the new member, Hon. Yusuf Idris Gusau expressed joy over the development, assuring Kurya and his supporters of equal treatment within the APC. He commended party leaders, including the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, and Senator Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, for their purposeful leadership.

Idris added that more PDP leaders across Zamfara were already concluding plans to join the APC, which he said remains the party to beat in the state ahead of 2027.

The defection ceremony was attended by several party stalwarts, including the State Welfare Secretary, Hon. Bashir Idris Ataka, his deputy, Alh. Shehu J. Muhammad, Special Adviser to the Minister of State for Defence, Hon. Ibrahim Maigandi Danmalikin Gidan Goga, and the convener of the Yazid Shehu Danfulani Project, Mallam Abubakar Sadiq.
