DAN Trains Diabetic Patients Ahead of Ramadan in Gusau

By Muhammad Sani, Gusau

The Diabetes Association of Nigeria (DAN) has organised a pre-Ramadan health education lecture for diabetic patients in Zamfara State, urging them to take extra precautions as the fasting period approaches.

The sensitisation programme, held on Saturday, February 14, at the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau, brought together scores of patients seeking guidance on how to manage their condition safely during Ramadan.

Leading the session, medical consultant Dr. Kabir Sada engaged participants in an interactive discussion focused on practical diabetes management. He stressed the importance of adhering strictly to prescribed medications, regularly monitoring blood sugar levels, and adopting healthy lifestyle habits.

Patients were also advised to immediately report any unusual symptoms or complications to their healthcare providers to avoid emergencies while fasting.

Dr. Sada reaffirmed the Zamfara State government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and reducing the burden of chronic diseases. According to him, the sensitisation programme and distribution of medications form part of a broader strategy to strengthen healthcare outcomes across the state.

He noted that supporting diabetic patients remains a priority, particularly during religious periods that may pose health risks.“We have been doing this for 19 years,” Dr. Sada said.

“All we do is to sensitise and provide support to the patients, and they are seeing the advantages because every year patients’ attendance increases significantly.” He explained that consistent public health education has encouraged more people to seek early treatment and manage their condition more effectively.

One of the beneficiaries, Hajiya Rabi Mamman Yaro, expressed gratitude for the initiative. She said that since being diagnosed with diabetes, she has consistently attended follow-up sessions to gain knowledge about managing her health. DAN distributed the medications donated by Zamfara State medical outreach committee, describing the gesture as timely support in safeguarding patients’ wellbeing ahead of Ramadan.
