No fewer than 200 sickle cell patients have benefited from a free medical outreach and cash donations organized by Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, the wife of the Zamfara State Governor.
The event, held at the Federal Medical Center, Gusau, was organized to mark the 2024 World Sickle Cell Day. Themed “Hope Through Progress: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Globally,” the program was spearheaded by the Office of the First Lady.

In her remarks, Hajiya Huriyya emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, describing it as a call to action to unite the sickle cell community, raise awareness, reduce stigma, and provide encouragement to those affected by the disorder.
“Many sickle cell patients face difficulties accessing medication, either due to financial constraints or other reasons. It is crucial that we provide support during these challenging times,” she stated.
She praised Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration for its efforts to improve access to quality healthcare in the state and urged individuals and corporate organizations to continue advocating for sickle cell patients and their families. She also called on patient advocacy groups to help increase awareness and reduce the stigma associated with the disease.

Additionally, the First Lady encouraged people to undergo genotype testing before marriage to prevent the spread of the disorder.
The event was attended by both children and adults living with sickle cell anemia from across Zamfara State.
