U-turn: NUC Withdraws Order to Reopen Universities

By Suleman Tudu

The National Universities Commission (NUC), has withdrawn its earlier directives to Vice Chancellors to reopen Nigerian Universities in a move to enforce an earlier court order directing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off the strike.

The withdrawal was contained in a letter sent to Pro-Chancellors and Vice Chancellors of Universities dated 26th September, 2022 and signed by Mr. Sam M. Onaze, the Director finance and accounts on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the Commission.

“I have been directed to withdraw the National Universities Commission

(NUC) Circular Ref: NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135, and dated 23 September

2022 on the above subject. Consequently, the said circular stands withdrawn.

“All Pro-Chancellors and Chairmen of Governing Councils, as well as Vice-

Chancellors of Federal Universities are to please note. Further

development and information would be communicated to all relevant stakeholders,” the letter read.

The NUC in a circular referenced NUC/ES/138/VOL.64/135 dated September 23, has directed all Pro-Chancellors and Vice Chancellors of Universities to reopen Universities and ensure the resumption of academic activities.

ASUU and FG have been in a face-off for over seven months over the failure of the FG to implement some agreements reached with the union.
