
Zamfara State has launched its Sustainable Drug Supply Scheme (SDSS) and commenced the prequalification process for pharmaceutical companies to ensure a steady supply of quality medicines in the state.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Gusau, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Muhammed Maradun, emphasized the critical role of drug availability in strengthening the healthcare system. “No matter how sophisticated the health infrastructure or well-trained the healthcare workforce may be, without quality, potent, and efficacious drugs, we cannot achieve the desired health outcomes for our people,” she stated.
In a statement signed by Sulaiman Isah, information officer Zamfara state ministry of Health said, Dr. Maradun assured the public that the state government is committed to providing only high-quality medicines, stressing that the SDSS Operational Committee will oversee the prequalification process to ensure that pharmaceutical companies meet strict quality, efficacy, and safety standards.
She also noted the government’s efforts to secure adequate funding for the Drug Management Agency (DMA) to maintain an uninterrupted supply of essential medicines.
“A well-funded DMA is critical in realizing our vision for a sustainable healthcare system where no citizen is deprived of access to essential medicines,” she added.
The commissioner called on stakeholders, including pharmaceutical companies, healthcare providers, and government agencies, to work together in delivering quality healthcare services.
She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring hope and improving healthcare under the leadership of Governor Dr. Dauda Lawal. In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the DMA, Pharmacist Sani Bello, encouraged participating pharmaceutical companies to uphold quality, ethical business practices, and compliance with regulatory standards.
He also appreciated the support of traditional rulers, development partners, and government agencies in strengthening the healthcare sector.
The launch of the SDSS and the procurement committee is expected to enhance the availability of safe and effective medicines in Zamfara, improving healthcare delivery across the state.
