PDP Governors Decry Defections, Intimidations, Vow Party Repositioning

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) has condemned recent waves of defections from the party, describing them as “orchestrated distractions” that cannot undermine the PDP’s strong grassroots base and appeal across Nigeria.

Rising from its 7th meeting held in Gusau, Zamfara State capital, on Saturday, August 23, 2025, the Forum said the defection trend was being instigated by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as part of its wider anti-democratic strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the governors commended PDP supporters nationwide for their resilience in the face of what they described as “intimidation and untold anti-democratic actions” during recent byelections. They stressed that Nigerians were yearning for a return to affordable living, security, and good governance once provided under PDP-led administrations.

The Forum reaffirmed its commitment to the resolutions of the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, particularly preparations for the November 15 national convention, warning against attempts to derail the process by anti-party elements.

On security, the PDP governors hailed the Zamfara State Government for its efforts in curbing insecurity but condemned ongoing killings in Katsina, Plateau, Niger, and Benue States. They urged the Federal Government to adopt more responsive measures to protect citizens’ lives and properties.

The Forum also criticized the conduct of the August 9 nationwide byelection, accusing the APC of over-militarization, vote buying, and electoral violence. It urged Nigerians to be vigilant in defending their votes against electoral malpractice.

While appreciating Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal for his hospitality and “exemplary leadership in infrastructure, health, education, and security,” the Forum condoled with the people of Zamfara on the passing of the Emir of Gusau, as well as the people of Oyo State over the loss of traditional rulers.
