The Zamfara State House of Assembly has dissolved all its standing committees and approved a series of measures aimed at building institutional capacity and improving the quality of legislation, as lawmakers reconvened after the end-of-year recess.
During the plenary session, members considered and unanimously endorsed nine action points targeted at enhancing effective and efficient legislative service. The resolutions include the formulation of the Seventh Assembly Legislative Agenda, an oversight calendar and committee oversight manual, as well as advocacy for the assent of the Public Expenditure Bill and the creation of Zamfara Budget Research Office (ZABRO) Directorate and a Civil Society Organisations liaison office.
Additional measures approved by the House involve the submission of assets registers by ministries, departments and agencies, amendment of the Assembly Service Commission Law 2024 to accommodate an ICT department, organisation of in-house training for staff, and capacity strengthening for members of the Public Accounts Committee. These initiatives are expected to promote accountability, professionalism and improved performance within the Assembly.
The resolutions followed a motion moved by the House Majority Leader and member representing Tsafe East, Hon. Bello Muhammad Mazawaje Tsafe. In his presentation, he emphasised the importance of adopting the action points, noting that they would significantly enhance legislative service delivery and contribute to the overall development of the state.
Lawmakers representing Bungudu East, Birnin Magaji and Anka Hon. Yakuba Almajir Bela, Hon. Nura Dahiru Sabon Birni and Hon. Rilwanu Marafa Nagamboalso spoke in favour of the motion. They described the measures as timely and beneficial to Zamfara State, while commending the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, the Clerk, Mahmud Aliyu, and the Assembly’s management for their dedication to effective coordination and service delivery.
In his ruling, Speaker Moriki announced that the House, having reached a unanimous decision, formally adopted the nine action points and dissolved all existing standing committees, adding that new committee memberships would be announced later.
Earlier, he welcomed members back from recess and expressed sympathy with the state government and residents over recent bandit attacks, offering prayers for the victims and for lasting peace in Zamfara State.
