Correctional Officer Survives Suicide Attempt in Gusau

A personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Gusau, Zamfara State, attempted suicide in the early hours of Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

The officer, Abdullahi Nura, who holds the rank of Chief Correctional Assistant at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Gusau, reportedly jumped into the city’s main dam in a bid to end his life.

Sources say he reported for duty before chartering a motorcycle to the dam, where he suddenly leapt into the water.

The motorcyclist raised an alarm, prompting staff and security personnel at the dam to intervene and rescue him.

He was discovered wearing his official uniform and carrying his service ID card.

The incident was immediately reported to the state command headquarters.In response, the State Controller, CCS Musa Tanko, sent a team that transported Nura to the custodial centre’s medical clinic in Gusau. He has since regained consciousness and is receiving medical care.

The command’s spokesperson, ASC1 Mustapha Abubakar, confirmed that Nura is currently stable and responding to treatment.
