20-Year-Old Woman Arrested for Burying Baby Alive

Kebbi state police command has arrested a 20 year old woman for burying newborn baby alive in Dandi local government area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer of Kebbi State Command, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Wednesday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani.

According to the statement, the incident happened on June 25, 2025, when one Maryam Atiku, a 20-year-old resident of Nasarawa area, Kamba in Dandi Local Government Area, delivered a baby girl and later tied the newborn with wrappers, covered her mouth, and buried her alive in a shallow grave at Malam Yaro bush.

The following day, a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, discovered the disturbed soil while working on his farm and raised an alarm. Villagers rushed to the spot, exhumed the baby alive, and rushed her to General Hospital, Kamba, where doctors confirmed her condition as stable.

Police detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Birnin Kebbi, arrested the suspect, who confessed to the crime during investigation. She has since been arraigned in court.

The Commissioner of Police reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for child abuse, exploitation, and gender-based violence, urging parents and community leaders to protect children under their care.

He also appreciated the wife of the Kebbi State Governor, Hajia Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris, for supporting the rescued baby and her custodian, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad.
