Sokoto Youth for Progressive Movement Withdraws from National Protest

The Sokoto Youth for Progressive Movement (SYPM) has announced its withdrawal from the national peaceful protest scheduled for August 1, 2024.

The decision follows extensive consultations with key stakeholders in the state, including youth leaders, traditional leaders, the business community, and civil society organizations.

The SYPM cited several concerns that influenced their decision. One major issue is the lack of coordination among the participating groups, which threatens the effectiveness and safety of the protest.

The movement expressed worries that without a unified approach, the protest could result in conflicting messages and increased tension among protesters.

Another significant concern is the absence of an effective leadership structure for the protest. The SYPM emphasized the importance of clear leadership to manage the complexities of a national protest and noted that the current disorganization could lead to legal violations and safety risks.

The SYPM also pointed to the fragile security situation in Sokoto, highlighting recent developments that have heightened the risks associated with large public gatherings. The movement stressed that ensuring the safety of their members and other protesters is their top priority, and under the present circumstances, proceeding with the protest could jeopardize public security.

Despite withdrawing from the protest, the SYPM remains committed to advocating for positive change and will continue to explore alternative methods to advance their goals. The movement appreciates the understanding and support of its members and the broader community during these challenging times.
