Violent Protests in Zamfara: Coalition of Northern Groups Calls for Calm

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has called for calm and restraint amidst escalating violent protests in Zamfara State.

Originally part of a national peaceful protest that began on August 1, 2024, the situation in Zamfara remained peaceful until Monday, when it took a violent turn.

CNG Coordinator Hassan Hussain highlighted that what started as a legitimate demonstration of constitutional rights under Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution has now been infiltrated by criminal elements.

“These elements have manipulated mostly underage protesters, inciting violence and leading to significant property damage, injuries, and disruptions.” He said

The CNG observed that the initial days of the protest in Zamfara were peaceful, with security agents ensuring the safety of the protesters. However, the infiltration of these criminal elements has now led to serious injuries among protesters, destruction of properties, and the shutdown of businesses, public offices, and schools.

The group has also noted the disturbing involvement of foreign influences, with some protesters flying foreign flags and calling for external intervention in Nigeria’s governance. This, the CNG warns, could threaten the country’s sovereignty and exacerbate the current instability.

Amidst the economic hardships exacerbated by recent government policies, the CNG acknowledges the legitimate grievances of the northern populace but urges for these issues to be addressed through peaceful dialogue.

They therefore called on both the federal and state governments to take urgent steps to alleviate the suffering of the people and improve security and welfare.

In their statement, the CNG emphasizes the importance of unity, patriotism, and adherence to the rule of law. They urge all stakeholders, including protestors, community leaders, and security forces, to work together to restore order and pursue constructive solutions.

“The strength of our state lies in our unity and our ability to address our grievances through peaceful means,” said Hussain.

He called on the public to remain calm and support efforts aimed at restoring order, emphasizing that violence will only deepen divisions and hinder progress.

The CNG’s plea comes at a critical time for Zamfara, a state that has faced numerous challenges over the past decade. The coalition calls for a collective commitment to peace and patriotism to build a brighter future for the state.
