A police officer was killed and several travelers, including an expatriate and workers of a construction firm, were abducted when armed bandits ambushed the Tsafe-Funtua road in Zamfara State on Thursday morning.
Eyewitnesses reported that the heavily armed bandits blocked the busy highway at Kwanar Rogo for several hours, shooting at any moving vehicles. One survivor said that the bandits laid an ambush and indiscriminately opened fire. Among the vehicles attacked was a Toyota RAV4 Jeep carrying an expatriate, whose police escort was killed on the spot. The expatriate, along with numerous other travelers, was abducted and taken to an unknown location.
It took nearly two hours before a combined team of security operatives arrived to clear the road and restore traffic flow. The delay allowed the bandits ample time to escape with their captives.
