The Zamfara State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued an ultimatum to the state government, demanding immediate implementation of the National Minimum Wage of ₦70,000. Failure to comply by November 30, 2024, will result in an indefinite statewide strike starting December 1.
This resolution emerged from the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held at the Labour House, Gusau. The move follows directives from the NLC’s National Secretariat, which recently decried non-compliance with the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act by several state governments, including Zamfara, labeling it a violation of workers’ rights amid soaring living costs.
“All affiliate unions in Zamfara unanimously support this ultimatum,” said Comrade Sani Halliru, Chairperson of the NLC Zamfara State Council. “Justice delayed is justice denied. We will not relent until the minimum wage is fully implemented.”
The council criticized the state government for what it called a disregard for workers’ welfare and warned of widespread disruption if their demands are ignored.
Workers across Zamfara are urged to prepare for the industrial action, described as a necessary step to ensure their rights and improve their livelihoods.
The NLC has vowed to stand firm in advocating for fair treatment of Nigerian workers, stating that the time for justice and accountability is now.
