The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State has accused the state government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of arming thugs to intimidate voters ahead of Saturday’s House of Assembly byelection in Kaura Namoda.
In a statement signed by Yusuf Idris Gusau, APC Publicity Secretary, the party claimed that armed men wearing Community Protection Guards (CPG) uniforms were deployed on Friday night to Kaura Namoda town and Kasuwar Daji village, despite a ban on such activities by security agencies.
The APC alleged that the aim was to threaten, harm, or kill innocent citizens who intend to participate in the election. The party said it had formally written to all security agencies in the state to alert them to the alleged plot, warning of possible violence.
It further accused Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration of previously using armed thugs to harass residents, and alleged that the firearms now being deployed could be stored for use in the 2027 general elections.
The APC called on the National Security Adviser to investigate the matter, trace the source of the weapons, seize them, and prosecute those responsible.
