Five months after devastating floods ravaged Gummi town, leaving thousands of homes submerged, Senator Abdulaziz Yari has initiated the promised reconstruction of affected houses.
The senator, representing Zamfara West and a former governor of Zamfara State, had visited the community during the disaster and pledged to rebuild all destroyed homes.
True to his word, Yari formed the “Gummi Flood Disaster Management Committee,” which has since made some progress in the recovery efforts.
According to the committee’s chairman, Hon. Murtala Muhammad Rini, the senator, has delivered 200 trucks of cement, totaling 180,000 bags, alongside 7,500 bundles of roofing sheets, and has provided financial assistance to affected families.
Rini revealed that an estimated 4,036 homes were shortlisted for reconstruction under Yari’s initiative. Verification efforts are ongoing, in collaboration with the Gummi Emirate Council, to ensure the accurate identification of affected properties.
“This process has also involved resolving disputes among siblings over inheritance issues, and we’ve achieved remarkable success through dialogue,” Rini explained.
The senator has taken full responsibility for the reconstruction, engaging engineers to assess, redesign, and supervise the rebuilding process. Construction is being executed in phases, with additional materials and funds provided upon completion of each stage.
Beneficiaries such as Ibrahim Teacher, Muhammadu Mai-Gurmi, and Ummaru Dan Shalanda expressed deep gratitude for the senator’s intervention. “We were living in makeshift shelters before, but now, thanks to Senator Yari, we are getting new homes,” Mai-Gurmi said. “We pray for his continued success and protection.”
The rebuilding effort has turned Gummi town into a bustling construction hub, offering hope to displaced families and setting a benchmark for disaster recovery in Zamfara State.
