Zamfara: Canoe Capsizes With 46 people onboard in Bukkuyum

In another tragic boat Capsize incident barely a week after the one in Gummi, boats head-on collision that capsized with over 40 passengers onboard and another one at Nasarawar Kifi Gummi LGA with over 30 onboard has capsized, today another boat Capsized with over 46 passengers at Mashayar Garba Rogo in Bukkuyum town, Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara state.

A resident of the area, Malam Aliyu Umar Bukkuyum comfirmed that the canoe loaded with 46 people capsized around 10:30am today (Tuesday) and 4 persons, all children, drowned in the tragic incident, two corpses recovered and the other two are missing while 12 others are currently at General hospital Bukkuyum (unconscious) receiving medical attention.

A survivor of the incident, Buhari Usman (Messi) who admitted that they were about 50 passengers onboard mostly small children (boys and girls) and few adults were to cross the river (River Zamfara) to their farms across the river. However at the middle of the journey the boat developed some abnormal movement which despite the effort of the boat captains it Capsized.

“I personally rescued 12 children and other adults among us. We made the same rescue of good numbers of the victims, but unfortunately 4 died, two bodies were recovered while the remaining two are still missing” Buhari explained.

The incident was confirmed by the Sole Administrator of Bukkuyum Hon Nasiru Muhammad (DG) said it was due to overload, anxiety and failure to respect guidelines for using boats, however he said, government is still taking care of the 12 rescued victims at the general hospital Bukkuyum. Noting that measures would be taken to avert reoccurrence of the incident.

Experts are presently in the river searching for the remaining two missing passengers.
