Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic boat accident that claimed the lives of over 40 people in the Gummi local government area.
The incident occurred early Saturday when a boat carrying passengers capsized in the Bakin Kasuwa River, Uban Dawaki Ward.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the governor described the accident as a “monumental disaster” and extended his condolences to the families of the victims.
He assured them of the state government’s commitment to support those affected.
Governor Lawal has directed the Zamfara State Emergency Management Agency (ZEMA) to immediately commence rescue and recovery operations.
The commissioner for Humanitarian and Relief Matters has also been tasked with coordinating the relief efforts to ensure victims and their families receive prompt assistance.
“We woke up to the tragic report of a boat accident, resulting in the loss of over 40 lives,” the governor’s statement read. He further prayed for the souls of the deceased and emphasized the government’s resolve to take preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
Rescue efforts are ongoing as the state rallies to support the affected community.
