Former Zamfara State Governor and Senator representing Zamfara West Senatorial District, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar (Marafan Sokoto), has launched the reconstruction of over 4,000 houses destroyed by floods in Gummi town, Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The first phase of the project, which commenced on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, aims to provide immediate relief to the affected residents.
According to a press release signed by Hon. Ibrahim Muhammad, Chairman of the Publicity Committee of A.A. Yari Political Organization, the project involves the distribution of 200 trucks of cement (180,000 bags), 7,500 bundles of roofing zinc, and cash support to victims.
The initiative is designed to address the devastating impact of the floods that displaced scores of residents during this year’s wet season. Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Gummi, Senator Yari, represented by Hon. Muhammad Muttaka Rini, Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission in Zamfara, explained that the victims were categorized into three groups based on the size and number of rooms in their houses.
The committee identified 4,038 affected houses, dividing them into three categories: 706 houses with 11-15 rooms, houses with 7-9 rooms, and those with 1-6 rooms. In the first phase, victims will receive cash and cement to commence rebuilding, while the second phase will focus on providing wood and roofing zinc. Hon. Muttaka Rini assured that a monitoring sub-committee, comprising traditional rulers, security personnel, and other stakeholders, has been established to ensure proper implementation.
The Emir of Gummi, Justice Lawal Hassan (rtd), commended Senator Yari for his commitment and quick response to the plight of the flood victims. The Emir pledged the full cooperation of the Emirate Council in ensuring the successful execution of the project.
It will be recalled that the floods, which struck Gummi town in September 2024, left many residents homeless. During a visit to the affected area, Senator Yari had pledged to personally oversee the reconstruction of the destroyed homes.
