NAWOJ Inaugurates new executives in Zamfara, Calls for Commitment, Support

The National Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, has officially inaugurated the new executives of the Zamfara State council.

The ceremony, held at the Nigerian Army Officers Mess and Suite in Gusau, saw Hajia Ibrahim emphasize the need for dedication to the association’s objectives, which include promoting the welfare of women and children.

Hajia Ibrahim congratulated the newly elected Chairperson, Comrade Jamila Musa Kanoma, and the other executives. She also appealed to the state government to provide a vehicle to facilitate the association’s activities. Additionally, she urged the office of the state first lady and the wife of the deputy governor to collaborate with NAWOJ in advancing women’s affairs.

Highlighting the importance of education, Hajia Aisha called on the state government to prioritize girl child education for the betterment of society. She also encouraged women journalists to remain united and work collaboratively in line with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) constitution.

The newly sworn-in executives are: Comrade Jamila Musa Kanoma, Chairperson; Rukayya Sallah, Vice Chairperson; Fatima Ibrahim Dosara, Secretary; Gambo Alhassan Kwatarkwashi, Assistant Secretary; Hajara Abdullahi, Treasurer; Nabila Khamis, Financial Secretary and Farida Abdullahi, Auditor

In her speech, the Vice President of NAWOJ Zone A, Comrade Rabi Muhammad Gwadabawa, charged the new executives to uphold and strengthen unity among members and collaborate with donor agencies and other stakeholders to ensure a successful tenure.

The National Secretary of NAWOJ, Comrade Wasila Ladan, dissolved the former executives, commending them for bringing peace and stability to NAWOJ in Zamfara state through teamwork and good leadership. She urged the new executives to emulate their predecessors by initiating programs that align with NAWOJ’s aims and objectives.

Comrade Rabi Yusuf, Chairperson of the credentials committee, noted that the NAWOJ Zamfara state council achieved a remarkable consensus through mutual understanding, collaboration, and a shared vision for the future, as all candidates for the executive positions were elected unopposed. She said this development is a testament to the unity and shared purpose that define NAWOJ.

In her acceptance speech, Comrade Kanoma expressed gratitude to the NAWOJ national secretariat for their support and encouragement. She pledged to be inclusive in her leadership approach and to ensure that all members are involved in the association’s activities.

In a vote of thanks, the Zonal Secretary, NAWOJ Zone A, Comrade Daharatu Ahmed Aliyu, expressed appreciation to the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, and his cabinet for providing journalists with a level playing field to discharge their duties diligently.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by notable figures, including representatives of the House of Representatives members for Maru/Bungudu and Gusau/Tsafe federal constituencies, Hon. Abdulmalik Zubairu (Zannan Bungudu) and Hon. Kabiru Amadu (Mai Palace), respectively. Other dignitaries present included former NUJ Chairman and former Commissioner of Information, Hon. Ibrahim Muhammad Birnin Magaji; District Head of Kanoma, Alh. Yahaya Muhammad; Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Iliyasu Idris; NUJ Zone A Secretary, Abdulrazak Bello Kaura; and NUJ Chairman Zamfara State Council, Comrade Ibrahim Musa Maizare, among others.

Highlights of the event included a drama presentation on media collaboration, and the presentation of awards and souvenirs.
