The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized Governor Dauda Lawal for allegedly reneging on his campaign promises to end insecurity in the state.
The APC, in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris Gusau, on Wednesday, accused the governor of making deceptive claims during a recent interview on Channels Television.
According to the APC, Governor Lawal had promised during his 2023 campaign to eradicate banditry within a month if elected, but almost two years into his tenure, insecurity persists.
The statement alleged that the governor has shifted blame to security agencies and the federal government, instead of collaborating with them to address the security challenges in Zamfara.
The APC also accused Governor Lawal of adopting policies he previously condemned, such as establishing state-owned security guards. While acknowledging that the initiative had rekindled hope among citizens, the APC noted that the governor’s refusal to collaborate with Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, was counterproductive.
“Instead of joining hands with the federal government and Minister Matawalle to fight banditry, the governor continues to criticize the APC-led administration despite the remarkable successes recorded, especially in the North West,” the statement read.
The APC called on Governor Lawal to set aside political rivalry and work with the federal government and other stakeholders to eliminate banditry, emphasizing that achieving lasting security should take precedence over setting unrealistic deadlines.
