Senate President: “Senator Yari of Zamfara is the most competent” – Lawal Liman

A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Chairman of the APC in Zamfara state, Hon. Lawal M Liman advocates the competence of the former governor of Zamfara state, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari Abubakar to climb up the seat of the president of the Nigerian Senate in the 10th national assembly.

Liman made this known in a statement issued to newsmen  and made available to MEDIA SMARTS NIGERIA in Gusau, Zamfara State capital.

The former APC Chairman highlighted that, “Senator Yari possesses among other qualities of a good leader cum politician in the 21st century, political influence, good political networking across the political parties and geopolitical zones, good leadership qualities, and leadership experience that spreads across the two arms of government- the Executive and Legislature (having served as a state governor of Zamfara State for good eight years and a Member, National Assembly-Rep.).

“As two times Governor of Zamfara state, Yari performed wonderfully well in the areas of education, agriculture, security of lives and property, and human capital development, among others. Political and development analysts pointed out that all these achievements were products of the good working relationship that Yari established between the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary, a development that was championed by his administration.

“Yari was a force that further cemented and united all the then-state governors of Nigeria, irrespective of their political parties, when he served as the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum.

“Between 2007 and 2011, at the National Assembly, as a Member of the Federal House of Representatives, Senator Yari served many standing and ad hoc committees.

“Senator Yari is a political mentor to many politicians. It is that quality of good mentorship that enabled him to ensure  the survival of the All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State. He deployed all his wealth of experience in ensuring that the Party remained strong and firmly rooted in the ground. Such effort is making the APC in the state and Nigeria as a whole wax from strength to strength.” Liman concluded.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF SEN. YARI’S PROFILE

Born in the year 1968, Abdul’aziz Yari hails from Mafara town in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara state. Yari initiated his political career after the emergence of the democracy system of government in 1999. He served as the ‘Secretary’ of the then All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) between 1999 and 2003. He was elected ‘Chairman’ of the ANPP in Zamfara State in 2003 and later rose to the position of ANPP ‘National Financial Secretary’ and served in this position till 2007 when he was duly elected into the House of Representatives, as ‘Member’ representing Anka/Talata Mafara Federal Constituency from 2007 to 2011.

Yari was declared winner of the Zamfara State governorship election in April, 2011. A victory in which he unseated the then governor Mahmud Shinkafi. Yari secured a second term as ‘Governor of Zamfara’ in 2015 under the platform of the newly established political party, the All Progressives Congress  (APC). Remarkably, on May 18, 2015, Yari was unanimously elected as Chairman of Nigeria’s Governors Forum (NGF).

In 2019, Yari contested for the seat of Senator to represent the people of Zamfara West senatorial district wherein he was declared winner but eventually cancelled by the Supreme Court along with all other APC flag bearers in the state.

The former governor re-contested for the seat of a Senator and ’emerged winner and returned elected’ in the 2023 National Elections with wide margin.
