Opinion: Hisbah aikin Allah: Answering the Skeptics – Dr Nuraddeen

It is important to address the accusations and criticisms directed towards the Kano State Hisbah Board regarding their actions against TikTokers, prostitution, and un-Islamic activities in the state. While some may disagree with their methods, it is crucial to understand the rationale behind their actions in order to have a more nuanced viewpoint.

Firstly, the Kano State Hisbah Board is a religious and moral force that operates according to Islamic law, which governs the state. Their primary goal is to uphold the values and principles of Islam, as recognized and practiced by the majority of the population in Kano State. Thus, their actions are rooted in religious and cultural beliefs, aiming to maintain societal harmony and protect the moral fabric of the community.

Regarding the crackdown on TikTokers, it is important to note that the issue lies not with the platform itself, but with the content being shared. Hisbah’s concern is centered around content that may be deemed indecent, promoting immorality, or violating Islamic values. Their interventions aim to discourage such behavior and encourage a responsible use of social media platforms that is consistent with the teachings of Islam.

Similarly, the actions taken against prostitution are aligned with Islamic teachings. Prostitution is universally considered immoral and illegal in many societies, not just Kano State. Hisbah’s efforts to combat this issue are not unique to Kano, as many other countries and regions work to eradicate such practices. The board’s role is to enforce the law and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation, while also aiming to promote a morally upright society.

Un-Islamic activities, in general, encompass a wide range of behaviors that contradict the principles and values of Islam. This can include gambling, substance abuse, indecent dressing, among others. The Hisbah Board, as a religious police force, has a mandate to address these activities in accordance with Islamic teachings and local laws. Their actions are guided by an intention to promote righteousness and discourage behavior seen as harmful or immoral to individuals and society as a whole.

However, it is crucial to note that while the Hisbah Board is responsible for upholding Islamic values, they must also operate within the boundaries of the law. Any excesses or abuses should be addressed and appropriately addressed to ensure fairness and justice.

Ultimately, the actions of the Kano State Hisbah Board should be seen within the context of a society that values its religious and cultural heritage. Understanding their motivations and objectives can help foster a more constructive dialogue around their activities, allowing for a better understanding of the complex dynamics between religion, culture, and governance in Kano State.
